St John the Evangelist - Delabole Church and Community Centre A typical late Victorian building, Grade II listed, this church has recently been extensively re-ordered to provide community rooms for use by the village of Delabole. The pews have been replaced by comfortable seating and the whole church is flexible enough to allow concerts, meetings, coffee mornings etc. The church now contains a fully fitted kitchen, disabled and ordinary toilet, disabled entrance and an infinite variety of arrangements inside. It was rededicated by Bishop Bill of Truro in November 2000. The church can be turned into a large hall and meeting room when not being used for church worship. Many local groups are now using it. There is a large village Youth Club which uses the building as its base - meeting 7.00p.m.-10.00p.m. every Friday. There is a homework club on Tuesday after school. The village Quilters meet fortnightly as well as two computer workshops per week. There are plans to establish a Link into Learning group one morning per week. Booking secretary and caretaker: Mrs Tricia Hicks 01840 212520. The building is now used almost every day of the week and the concept is currently being considered by other churches as a means of serving their communities and keeping their doors open. The project was financed by grants obtained from Rural Churches in Community Trust, The Church Urban Fund and Cornwall Independent Trust Fund in addition to those obtained from smaller grant bodies and individual donations. It is hoped to complete the project by creating another room above the present meeting room with access for the disabled by a stair-lift. This will also be for use by the community. The Church of St John the Evangelist has a unique slate altar built from Delabole slate, quarried at the world-renowned quarry in the centre of the village. The Quarry has been very supportive of the church and has recently provided a new path, steps and hand-rail to replace old dangerous ones. In 2001 St John's had the privileged of hosting the Archdeaconry celebrations of the 125th Anniversary of the Mother's Union which comprised a three day Flower Festival terminating in a great day of celebration on the Saturday when visitors were treated to story telling, hourly prayers, and entertainment on the organ by Stuart Biddick, the the ever popular native of Delabole. At 2.00p.m. a Festival Service was held at which the preacher was the Archdeacon of Bodmin, the Ven. Clive R. F. Cohen ASIB. The church was packed to the doors for this service at which thanks were given for the work of the M.U. both locally, nationally and internationally, new members were admitted and long service certificates issued to many members of the North Cornwall branches represented. The certificate issued to the most longest serving member on this occasion was for 65 years of membership by Marjorie Parker presently of the St Teath branch. At the end of the service, whilst those present were fed and watered, Stuart Biddick entertained once more, this time with a selection of Cornish songs in which many present joined in the singing. A great day for this recently restored church and all connected with it. It is the home of the world famous Delabole Slate Quarry and the first commercial wind-farm to be operated in Britain which opened in 1991. On the site of the wind-farm is now located the Gaia Renewable Energy Centre (Click for further information). A visit to the Bettle and Chisel public house recalls the days when Delabole was dependant on hand quarrying and the slate transported out through the harbours at Port Gaverne and Port Isaac. Now a warm welcome and traditional fare is offered to sustain the traveller. Information (Click for further local information) |
